Me at Hoh R. 2001   Who am I?

I am a Ph.D. graduate student at Oregon State University majoring in Water Resources Engineering and minoring in Ecosystem Informatics. My general research interests include floodplain ecology and stream restoration and design.

    Work experience

2006-2008 Graduate Teaching Assistant, Department of Geoscience and Crop & Soil Science, Oregon State University.  Teach labs and grade student work: twice for GEO 322 Surface Processes, and once each for GEO 487 Groundwater Hydrology, GEO 221 Environmental Geology, and CSS 205 Soil: Sustainable Ecosystems.

2007          Ecoinformatics IGERT Summer Institute Student Assistant, Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering, Oregon State University.  Assist students in research activities; coordinate field trips.

2007          Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Forest Science, College of Forestry, Oregon State University.  Conduct an ecohydrology research project at H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest.

2005          Instructor, Survey of Biology, Science Division, Lane Community College. Freshman level biology. Course topics included evolution, ecology, and diversity; labs conducted indoors and outdoors.

2003          Contributing Author, Riparian Zone Forest Management and the Protection of Biodiversity: A problem analysis for the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement.  Technical writing of a section on stream macroinvertebrates for a publication on riparian biodiversity.

2002          Assistant for Gregory Stewart, PhD student in the Department of Geosciences, Oregon State University.  Used ADP, GPS, and Insight laser surveying equipment to evaluate channel geometry.

2002          Teaching Assistant, Forest Biology, Department of Forest Resources, College of Forestry, Oregon State University.  Assisted professor, coordinated field labs, graded assignments.

2001          Assistant for Georgianne Moore, PhD student in the Department of Forest Science, Oregon State University.  Assisted with sapflow sensors, nutrient sampling, TDR, and LAI data collection to evaluate vegetation water use.

2001          Volunteer In Parks Assistant, City of Eugene (temp through Selectemp).  Built trails, worked with volunteer groups and at-risk youth.

1998-2000 Conservation Assistant,Oregon Natural Resources Council.  Created and kept database of timber sales and other forest activities.  Participated in various stages of the NEPA process.  Outreach in the public, business and environmental community. 

1998          Environmental Educator and Site Analyst, YMCA Camp Arbutus/Hayo-Went-Ha.  Created and designed nature trails, brochures, signs, and environmental education materials.  Analyzed environmental impacts on site.

 

    Volunteer experience

2006-8       Student Representative of the non-profit organization River Restoration Northwest whose goal is to better educate professionals working in the field of river and stream restoration. Duties include development of a student chapter, assistance in the annual meeting, and outreach to Pacific Northwest universities.

2007          Taught a workshop for the Ecoinformatics Summer Institute. Lead discussions and field exercises regarding large river physics and ecology for undergraduates participating in the summer program.

2002-3       Graduate Representative for the Department of Forest Science.  Duties included: representative on the Office Manager Search Committee, Lead Organizer of Spring 2003 department seminar, participant in faculty retreat, amongst other tasks.

2002-3       Volunteer at workshops, conferences and symposiums.  Helped with AV equipment and preparation of speakers at the Northwest Stream Restoration and Design Symposium, American Water Resources Association annual meeting, and the anticipated North American Forest Ecology Workshop.

2002          Volunteer at events for the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest.  Presented research at HJA Daze and worked with students of the Inner City Youth Program.

2002          Research of water quality objectives for Amazon Creek with the Long Tom Watershed Council.  Met with employees of the DEQ, City of Eugene, and Portland Bureau of Environmental Services to discuss options.  Presented materials at a watershed council meeting.

2001          Assisted a tropical field biology study at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. PI is Robin Chazdon.

2000          Assisted in a Forest Ecology course at Lane Community College.  Assisted with labs, field trips, and general preparation for an entry-level forest ecology class.

 

    Supplementary & educational workshops

2004    Master Watershed Stewardship Program, Oregon State University Extension, Salem, Oregon. Course covers a variety of scientific and social topics regarding stewardship and requires a 40-hour volunteer project with a watershed council.

2000    General Botany, Lane Community College.  Identification and keying Oregon flora.  4.0 GPA

2000    Environmental Leadership Institute Oregon League of Conservation Voters.  Workshops on fundraising, working in groups, and negotiation, teamed with a group project and presentation based upon campaign strategy.

1999    Training for Riparian Proper Functioning Condition, USFS/BLM.  Learned to evaluate the health and proper functioning condition for riparian ecosystems through field and classroom training.
