Texts:
Claridge, "High Resolution NMR Techniques in Organic Chemistry" (Elsevier/Pergamon) ISBN 0-08-042798-7
Pretsch, et al, "Structure Determination of Organic Compounds" 3rd Ed. (Springer) ISBN 3-540-67815-8
McLafferty & Turacek, "Interpretation of Mass Spectra",4th Ed. (University Science Books), ISBN 0-935702-25-3

The goal for this course is that the student will be able to apply modern spectroscopic methods (mass spectrometry, IR and NMR) to characterize and identify the structure of organic molecules. Students registering for undergraduate credit (CH435) will be expected to identify structurally simpler molecules than those registered for graduate credit (CH535).

News and items of interest will be posted periodically on this page.

News

1/7:  I will be unavailable for office hour this Thursday due to an orientation session for Faculty Senate.  I will also move up my office hour to 2 p.m. on Feb. 14 and March 13.

1/25: My Web server has been hacked. The fact that you made it here shows you were listening in class; for the foreseeable future keep coming via the Chemistry Courses list.
Tomorrow's review session is still on; at worst I will bring overheads of the ungraded problem spectra.
If the server issues with spectra are not handled by close of business today, the due date for HW3 will be put off till Wednesday.

1/25 (2 p.m.): Progress of a sort. IE7 seems to render pages correctly, so use that (if you can) for the moment. When (if?) we figure out the problem, I'll let you know. Please let me know of problems you are experiencing and I'll try to help find a workaround.

1/25 (3 p.m.) The COS web server has been fully reconfigured. We should be back in business; please let me know of any technical problems. (And clear your browser cache to make sure things reload.) Homework is still due on Monday unless I hear of any problems.

2/3:  I will have to cancel office hour on Tuesday, Feb. 5 due to planning commitments for the Linus Pauling Science Center.  Please call/email if you need to set up an appointment.

2/11:  Please recall that this Thursday I will be at Faculty Senate after 3 p.m.  I'll move up my office hour to 2-3 p.m., and will be available for other time by appointment.  Thanks for your patience.

"Students with documented disabilities who may need accommodations, who have any emergency medical information the instructor should know of, or who need special arrangements in the event of evacuation, should make an appointment with the instructor as early as possible, no later than the first week of the term."
